Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit – August 2026
In short
The Reserve Bank of India said data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for August 2026, collected from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, showed non-food bank credit grew 18.8% year on year as of the fortnight ended August 31, 2026. Credit to agriculture and allied activities rose 17.2%, credit to industry increased 18.2%, and credit to services grew 24.3%; the 41 banks together account for about 95% of total non-food credit by all scheduled commercial banks. In simple terms, bank lending across the economy picked up in August, with especially strong growth in services and solid gains in farming and industry, meaning more loans were flowing to businesses and other borrowers. The growth figures are for the fortnight ended August 31, 2026, and are compared with the corresponding fortnight of the previous year ended September 5, 2025.
Why it matters
An official statistical release: this IS the primary source for the number, not a report about it. Check the reference period it covers and whether earlier periods have been revised — revisions are common and are what make a figure quoted from memory unreliable.
